This weekend I built a compost bin with my new housemates. This is the first project of my new settled lifestyle and I am freaking excited about the rich dirt that’s going to come out of that bin. We built it using pallets found down the street. Four pallets for the walls and one pallet underneath for aeration. We were going to clip wire mesh to the outside to prevent critters from entering the pile, but then Mat discovered that vines would make a great critter barrier. Mat liberated the apple tree from it’s controlling vine friend so that we could twist the vines in between the planks of the pallets. I’m not sure that the critters will be thwarted by the vines, but it certainly looks lovely. Our pile is 1 yard by 1 yard by 1 yard so that it’s large enough to get really hot. We placed it in a sunny area in the yard protected from the wind to encourage the ideal temperature of 150 degrees for thermophillic bacteria.
